An Unexpected Surprise

I’m such an asshole. I know this.

EVERYONE knows this.

Sure, I’m a relatively nice dude but those who know me well know that I can be a bit of bastard at times.

So last night, when I went with my friends Ted and Cake Boss to an early screening of Alex Cross, starring the fabulous Tyler Perry, I knew that I would be in for one bad movie. I mean come on…..Tyler Perry? NOT in drag? I was set for a night of long sighs and eye rolls galore, but I wasn’t going to complain because it was a free screening. I’ve paid for movies that I hated and sat through them just because I paid.

I got to the theater at 5:15 for a 7pm show and the line had already formed. 2 hours later we all were in our seats. The lights dimmed, and a hush fell over the crowd. Suddenly, there he was! Tyler Perry as Alex Cross. I waited for the movie to become the atrocity that I knew it would be when suddenly, during the course of the film, I was pleasantly surprised. As I watched, I just couldn’t control myself. Each scene was more classic than the next. Alex Cross is, by far, the FUNNIEST movie I’ve seen all year.

And what makes it even funnier is the fact that it’s supposed to be a serious drama about serial killers, psychopaths..blah blah blah.

The shit’s hilarious.

And then I thought to myself ‘Hey Ben, stop being such an asshole. Tyler is trying something new. You shouldn’t be laughing at his efforts’. I thought this, mind you, for about a good thirty seconds before I realized that everyone else was laughing too! Which just made me laugh even more. At several times during the movie, especially during certain ‘serious’ scenes, people would start laughing and I’d turn to Cake Boss and ask her ‘Why is everyone laughing???’ all while I myself was laughing hysterically.

I won’t give away the plot or anything because, honestly, you’ve pretty much already seen this movie a thousand times in many different iterations. HOWEVER, that shouldn’t stop you from going to see it. It wasn’t a bad movie, and the unexpected laughter will keep you engaged all the way to the end, when a familiar character from many of Tyler’s movies will come out, drop a famous Madea-esque line and then BOOM! The End.

10′s across the board honey, 10′s!!!!!
